Chemical Structure

Of cardboard- compromised of processed wood. made out of cellulose molecule- which is a very long molecule to make paper with.

Of styrofoam- made from polystyrene. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic substance, which is in solid state at room temp, but flows if heated above its glass transition temperature, and becomes solid again when cooled. Hard plastic with limited flexibility.

Of waxes/oils/fats- Water doesn't mix with these.
Trigyleceride is a fat in our body- 3 carbons bonded through an oxygen.

Explain why water is attracted to cardboard and not styrofoam.
Water is attracted to cardboard because of the electronegativity. Electronegativity of oxygen is 3.5 and Hydrogen is 2.1. Cellulose molecule is OH, so it's a big negative number.
Electronegativity of Hydrogen is 2.1 and for Carbon it is 2.5 so for polystyrene (styrofoam) there is almost no charge therefore it doesn't stick to it.
